Our coalition of community members, organizations, business, the faith community, education and non-profits is committed to working together to solve the difficult problems faced by most communities across the country: attainable housing, transportation, economic development that brings in livable wages. There is so much wrapped up in that work.
Attainable housing, as defined by @Home, means housing in line with incomes earned in Adams County. We, like all communities need more housing that can be accessed through a Housing Choice Voucher, but it is so much more than that! We need housing that people working in the service and tourism industry can afford, housing teachers, police officers and young professionals can afford, housing that seniors who worked their entire lives in Adams County can afford. And in a community surrounded by beautiful agriculture and State and Federal parks, identifying appropriate areas for development is critical. Where does the infrastructure existing? Where is land available and what does zoning require?
Transportation in a mostly rural county is complex as well. Fixed routes only really benefit the county seat but what about those in our rural boroughs and townships? This not only impacts an individual’s ability to earn a livable wage but their health and their child’s education as well.
Economic Development work, led by the Adams Economic Alliance, is critical and interconnected. Nearly 68% of those who are employed leave our county for employment. That is significant. It allows folks to earn a livable wage to afford to live here but it impacts the long-term viability of local businesses. Agriculture and tourism rely on a local workforce and that is dwindling. We hear from local employers that they simply can’t compete with wages that can be earned outside of the county. And if your wages won’t allow you to buy or rent a home, what are your options.
These issues are what called our coalition to action. We want Adams County to stay a thriving community where families, individuals, and seniors can afford to live well, our local businesses can thrive, and we can attract appropriate development to support our local economy. This is not the work of a single entity but takes all of us working to solve these big problems! Please join us!
Our coalition @Home’s Steering Committee is made up of community partners and individuals who volunteer to work on the infrastructure and administration of @Home in Adams County. Those meetings typically occur on the 3rd Tuesday of the month. If you want to understand more about the Steering Committee and feel you have skills or strengths to bring to the table, please email home@sccap.org
